Achernar is die primêre (of A-)komponent[10] van die dubbelster[6] bekend as Alpha Eridani (of α Eri), en is die helderste ligpunt in die sterrebeeld Eridanus. Dit is die 10de helderste ster aan die naghemel. Die twee komponente is Alpha Eridani A (die primêre ster) en B (die sekondêre ster, soms informeel bekend as Achernar B). Hulle is sowat 139 ligjare van die Son af.[2]
Van die 10 helderste sterre in die lug is Alpha Eridani die warmste en blouste omdat dit ’n B-tipe ster is. Achernar het ’n ongewoon vinnige rotasiespoed, wat veroorsaak dat dit ’n ovaal vorm het. Die sekondêre ster is kleiner: Dit is ’n A-tipe ster. Dit wentel op ’n afstand van sowat 12 AE om Achernar.
