Sin Name stammt us dr aztekischä Sproch Nahuatl, nämlich vo Atl (Wasser) und Xolotl (Aztekägott). Das bedütet öbä Wasserspiel, Wassermonschter oder Wasserpuppä. Die erschtä Axolotl sind vom Alexander vo Humboldt (1769-1859) nach Europa igführt wordä. Sie händ als exotischi Kuriosität im Pariser Naturchundmuseum dient.
