Kalcitonin je peptidni hormon od 32 aminokiseline, koga luče parafolikulskećelije (poznate i kao C-ćelije) tireoidne žlijezde kod čovjeka i mnogih drugih životnja, u ultimofarinsksnom tijelu.[5] Djeluje na smanjenje kalcija u krvi (Ca2+ +) suprotstavljajući se učincima paratireoidnog hormona (PTH).[6]

Kalcitonin je nađen kod riba, gmizavaca, ptica i sisara]. Njegov značaj za ljude nije tako dobro utvrđen kao kod drugih životinja, jer njegova funkcija obično nije značajna u regulaciji normalnih homeostaza kalcija.[7] Pripada porodici kalcitoninu-sličnih proteina.

Ranije se kalcitonin nazivao i tirokalcitonin.
