Patriargie

Patriargie is 'n sosiale stelsel waarin mans basiese mag beklee en oorheers in rolle van politieke leierskap, morele gesag, sosiale voorreg en beheer van eiendom. In die gesin se domein hou vaders of vaderfigure gesag oor vroue en kinders. Sommige patriargale samelewings is ook patrilineal, wat beteken dat eiendom en titel deur die manlike afkoms geërf word.

"Patriargie" beteken letterlik "die heerskap van die vader"[1][2] en is afgelei van die Griekse πατριάρχης (patriarkhēs), "vader van 'n ras" of "hoof van 'n ras, patriarg",[3][4] wat 'n samestelling is van πατριά (patria), "geslag, afkoms"[5] (van πατήρ patēr, "vader") en ἄρχω (arkhō), "Ek heers".[6]
