Dionis u grčkoj mitologiji je jedan od dvanaest Olimpijaca, grčki bog plodnosti Zemlje, berbe grožđa, vegetacije, vina,[2] žena, voćnjaka i voća, vegetacije, plodnosti, svečanosti, ludila, religioznih praznika i pozorište.[3][4] Rimljani su ga zvali Bakus (/ˈbækəs/ ili /ˈbɑːkəs/; starogrčki: Βάκχος )[5] zbog ludnice koju je navodno izazvao zvanom baccheia. Kao Dionis Eleuterije ("oslobodilac"), njegovo vino, muzika i ekstatičan ples oslobađaju njegove sljedbenike od samosvesnog straha i brige i podrivaju opresivne stege moćnih.[6] Njegov Tirsus, žezlo sa stabljikom komorača, ponekad namotano bršljanom i sa koje kaplje med, je i blagotvoran štap i oružje koje se koristi za uništavanje onih koji se protive njegovom kultu i slobodama koje on zastupa.[7] Vjeruje se da oni koji sudjeluju u njegovim misterijama postaju opsjednuti i opunomoćeni od samog boga.[8]
