Petros Elia of Baz (Syriac: ܐܝܠܝܐ ܦܹܛܪܘܼܣ; April 1880 – 2 February 1932), better known as Agha Petros, was an Assyrian military leader during World War I.[3] He is considered a national hero for the Assyrians and other Christian minorities in the Middle East, Whose name also became a terror to the Muslims.[4] By 1918, Agha Petros and his Assyrian forces controlled parts of Iranian Azerbaijan, west of Lake Urmia, where they established a form of self-governance.[5] Petros also instigated the massacre of 1,000 Kurds in Kuhnashahir as revenge for the assassination of Mar Benyamin Shimun.[6] Men, women, and children fell victim to this massacre—no one was spared.
