Armenian chant

Armenian chant (Armenian: շարական, sharakan) is the melismatic[1] monophonic chant used in the liturgy of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the Armenian Catholic Church.

The Armenian chant, much like the Byzantine chant, is grouped in a system of eight modes called oktoechos.[2] There is no direct parallel between these modes and those of the western tradition. However, they bear a notable similarity with the Byzantine scale otherwise known as the double harmonic scale.[3][4]
