Bridgeton Burns Club was founded at 13 Main Street Bridgeton, Glasgow by Mr John Wilson and some friends from the local bowling club. Their first supper was held on 25 January 1870 at Mr Wilson’s grocer shop.
Its aims were to celebrate Robert Burns life and work via an annual supper and to run a schools competition for children in East of Glasgow which it still does today as a charity regulated by OSCR.
Several first ministers and politicians have spoken at the Club’s annual dinner. While the initial events were held in East of Glasgow public halls rapid growth around 1900 saw membership and attendance at dinners exceeding 500 and city centre hotels having to be used as they are today, making it regularly the largest Burns Supper in the world. Around 500 children, aged 5 to 18 , from 30 schools take part annually in the competition and concert. The Club also provides bursaries to students through its Fund for the Arts scheme.
Membership is open to all and the website is www.bridgetonburnsclub.org.uk
