Its territory has been inhabited by a very wide range of ancient peoples, such as Aschenez, Ausones, Oenotrians (Italians, Tauri, Morgetes, Sicels), Lucanians, Bruttians, Greeks and Romans; in the Middle Ages by Byzantines and Normans; then, in the Kingdom of Naples, by Anjou and Aragonese; finally it found its present location first in the Kingdom of Italy, then in the Italian Republic.
