Elaine Marie Catherine de Kooning (/də ˈkuːnɪŋ/ də KOO-ning,[2] Dutch: [də ˈkoːnɪŋ]; née Fried; March 12, 1918[1] – February 1, 1989[3]) was an Abstract Expressionist and Figurative Expressionist painter in the post-World War II era. She wrote extensively on the art of the period[4] and was an editorial associate for Art News magazine.[5]
