An ongoing war and civil conflict between the Government of Burkina Faso and Islamist rebels began in August 2015 and has led to the displacement of over 2 million people and the deaths of at least 10,000 civilians and combatants.
The war has been interpreted as being the Burkinabé theatre of the insurgency in the Sahel.
