Tetsuya Yamagami (Japanese: 山上 徹也, Hepburn: Yamagami Tetsuya, born 10 September 1980) is a Japanese man who has admitted to assassinating Shinzo Abe, the former Prime Minister of Japan, on 8 July 2022.[5] A resident of Nara, he was arrested at the scene of the assassination. He was 41 years old, had no prior criminal history, and was unemployed at the time of his arrest.[6][7][8]
As of July 2024, his trial has not been scheduled after delays, and attorneys state that it "will probably not begin this year".[9]
Nara District Public Prosecutors Office indicted Tetsuya Yamagami, 42, on murder charges as well as for violating gun laws
