Avatara (-ae, m) (scripto Devanagari अवतार avatāra 'descensus') in Hinduismo putatur deitatis descensus ex caelo (superioribus regionibus spiritualibus) in terram (inferiores existentiae regiones) esse, vel descensus Entis Supremi (h.e., Visnu pro Vaishnavites), qui in aliis linguis saepissime 'incarnationem', vel fortasse accuratius 'speciem' vel 'demonstrationem', significare habetur.[1][2]

Hoc nomen saepissime cum Visnu coniungitur, sed cum aliis deitatibus quoque aliquando coniungitur.[3] Varii avatararum Visnus indices in scripturis Hinduicis adsunt, inter quos decem Dasavatarae Garudae Puranae et viginti-duae avatarae in Bhagavata Purana, quamquam hic liber adfirmat incarnationes Visnus esse innumerabiles.[4] Avatarae Visnus sunt prima Vaisnavismi pars. Antiqua rei avatarae commemoratio, cum dogmate avatararum, in Bhagavadgita fit.[5]
