Samnium (Osce Safinim) appellabantur ampli fines paeninsulae Italiacae inter Montem Majella (hodie in Aprutio Regione) et Lucaniam, usque ad vallem Cominii in Latio meridionali, quos incolebat antiquus populus Italicus sua lingua Safineis vocatus, a Romanis autem Samnites[1], in quattuor tribus principales divisus: Caudinos, Pentros, Hirpinos et Carecinos. Lingua publica fuit lingua Osca ante annum 400.
