Faktor risiko
Dalam epidemiologi, faktor risiko ialah pemboleh ubah yang dikaitkan dengan peningkatan risiko penyakit atau jangkitan.[1]:38
Disebabkan kekurangan penyelarasan merentas disiplin, penentu (determinant), dalam pengertian saintifik yang diterima secara lebih meluas, sering digunakan sebagai sinonim. Perbezaan utama terletak pada bidang amalan: perubatan (amalan klinikal) berbanding kesihatan awam. Sebagai contoh daripada amalan klinikal, pengambilan rendah sumber diet vitamin C adalah faktor risiko yang diketahui bagi skurvi. Khusus kepada dasar kesihatan awam, penentu ialah risiko kesihatan yang umum, abstrak, berkaitan dengan ketidaksamaan dan sukar untuk dikawal oleh individu.[2][3][4] Sebagai contoh, kemiskinan dikenali sebagai penentu taraf kesihatan individu.

Unlike a biomedical model that views health as the absence of disease, this dynamic framework includes functional capacity and well-being as health outcomes of interest. It also presents the behavioral and biologic responses of individuals as factors that influence health but are themselves influenced by social, physical, and genetic factors that are beyond the control of the individual.
