Eleanor Rosalynn Smith Carter (August 18, 1927 – November 19, 2023) was an American activist, humanitarian and writer. She was the first lady of the United States from 1977 to 1981 as the wife of the 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter. Before becoming first lady, she was the first lady of Georgia from 1971 to 1975 when her husband was governor.
