Kimya ni hali ya kukosa sauti yoyote au kama ipo si ya kuvuruga nafsi. Ingawa kinaweza kuonekana kinyume cha mawasiliano, kinaweza kikawa na ujumbe wake (mzuri au mbaya) ulio muhimu kwa wengine.[1] Ndiyo sababu kinatumika katika taratibu mbalimbali, kama vile za ibada au za kukumbuka marehemu.

Vilevile, katikati ya hotuba, kimya kinaweza kuchangia utoaji na upokeaji wa maneno.

Kimya kinasaidia kutafakari, hivyo kinazingatiwa hasa katika monasteri, ambapo kinaratibiwa kwa makini ili kimya cha nje kichangie kimya cha ndani, yaani utulivu wa moyo mbele ya Mungu.[2][3]
