Teoforik isimler

Teoforik isim (Grekçe: θεόφορος,theophoros, anlamı "bir tanrı adını taşıyan isim"),^[1] antik dönemde ilgili tanrının korunmasına girmek için konulurdu.^[2]

Teofor terimi Yunanca "tanrı" anlamına gelen "theos" kelimesi ile, "desteklemek, taraftarı olmak" anlamlarına gelen "phore" kelimesinin birleştirilmesiyle oluşturulmuştur.^[3][4]

Teoforik isimlere eski çağlarda en çok Mezopotamya ve Yakın Doğu'daki diğer bölgelerde rastlanılmaktaydı.^[5][6][7] Kökenleri İlk Çağa belki de tarih öncesi devirlere dayanan bu isimler günümüzde hala mevcudiyetini sürdürmektedir. Arapça Abdullah (Allah'ın kölesi),^[8] Samed (Allah'ın 99 adından birisi; kimseye muhtaç olmayan) gibi isimler buna örnek olarak gösterilebilir.^[9]
