The 72nd annual Cannes Film Festival took place from 14 to 25 May 2019.[3] Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu served as jury president for the main competition.[4][5] South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho won the Palme d'Or, the festival's top prize, for the drama film Parasite; Bong became the first Korean to win the award.[6]

The festival honoured French filmmaker Agnès Varda, who died early that year, featuring her on the official poster of the festival.[7] The photograph used was taken during the filming of her debut film La Pointe Courte (1955), which screened at the Cannes Film Festival.[1]
