Dark fantasy, also called fantasy horror, is a subgenre of fantasy literary, artistic, and cinematic works that incorporates disturbing and frightening themes. The term is ambiguously used to describe stories that combine horror elements with one or other of the standard formulas of fantasy.[1] Dark fantasy settings are often eerie or gothic, with haunted forests, ancient ruins, decrepit castles, and misty graveyards.[2] Stories that often include evil creatures, gore, dark magic, and other types of unsettling imagery or characteristics, often set in a twisted reality, themes like decay, despair, and the inevitability of suffering.
