Kabul University (KU; دکابل پوهنتون/پوهنتون کابل)[2][3][4] is one of the major and oldest institutions of higher education in Afghanistan. It is in the 3rd District of the capital Kabul near the Ministry of Higher Education. It was founded in 1931 by King Mohammed Nadir Shah, whose prime minister at the time was his younger brother, Sardar Mohammad Hashim Khan. Approximately 22,000 students attend Kabul University. In August 2021, before the Taliban takeover, nearly half were female.[5]

Since December 2022, Kabul University has been closed to women, like other public universities in Afghanistan, to comply with the Taliban's education ban on women.[6][7]In March 2023, women protested outside of the university's entrance by reading their books.[6]
