Pomonok is a working class neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. Being a sub-section within Kew Gardens Hills, the area's borders are the Long Island and Horace Harding expressways to the north, Kissena Boulevard to the west, 164th Street to the east and 73rd Avenue to the south.
The area is most notably home to two large housing developments along Jewel Avenue. Those being the New York City Housing Authority's Pomonok Houses between Kissena and Parsons Boulevards [1] and the co-operative housing complex of Electchester between Parsons Boulevard and 164th Street. Both developments were built between 1949 and 1951 on the site of the former Pomonok Country Club.
The neighborhood’s name comes from the Algonquian name for Long Island,[2] and means either "land of tribute" or "land where there is travelling by water".[3]
Pomonok is part of Queens Community District 8.[4]
