The Stowers Institute for Medical Research is an independently operated, non-profit organization focused on foundational biological research, based in Kansas City, Missouri.

The institute is home to Principal Investigator labs and core Technology Centers actively investigating biology in research areas such as development and regeneration, evolutionary biology, genetics and genomics, molecular and cellular biology, neuroscience, and systems biology.[1]

James E. Stowers Jr. and Virginia Stowers established the Stowers Institute in 1994[2] after both were diagnosed with and recovered from cancer. Their collective vision was to create a world class research institution, in their hometown of Kansas City, Missouri, devoted to understanding biology at its most fundamental level. Jim and Virginia bestowed nearly $2 billion of their personal wealth to build the facility and to attract top-tier scientists from around the world. The Institute opened its doors in 2000[3] and operates with the following mission: To make a significant contribution to humanity through medical research by expanding our understanding the secrets of life and by improving life’s quality through innovative approaches to the causes, treatments, and prevention of diseases.[4]
