The Bird collaboration is a coordinated effort by WikiProject Birds to improve Wikipedia's bird-related content. However, being a member of WikiProject Birds is not a prerequisite for participation in this collaboration (nor, of course, is participation a requirement for membership in the WikiProject). All Wikipedians, regardless of their level of expertise on the subject, are welcome to contribute.
Aside from the main benefit of creating better bird articles on Wikipedia, it is hoped this initiative will a) Attract new editors to work on the Project; b) Improve the writing skills of existing editors; and c) Demonstrate the value of collaboration on Wikipedia. Additionally, some large bird articles may burn out individual editors before they reach Featured status. The ultimate goal of the Bird Collaboration is to get at least one bird or bird-related article featured every couple of months.
The bird collaboration was activated in March 2007 and was active until October 2008, during which time fourteen articles were worked upon, six of which are now Featured Articles. Following this, there was a hiatus until March 2009. Then followed four months with four collaborations, one of which is now Featured. There was only sporadic semiactivity from mid 2009 until November 2010, when the collaboration was activated again in earnest until mid 2013, when it again lapsed. It has been revived in June 2017 (taking advantage in a surge of activity in editing bird articles).
