"Ode to Joy" (instrumental) |
The "Anthem of Europe" (Latin: Hymnus Europae, say: HIM-nooss EW-roh-py) is the anthem of both the European Union and the Council of Europe. It has no words, just music, and is based on the 1823 song "Ode to Joy".
Its purpose is to honour shared European values. The EU describes it as expressing the ideals of freedom, peace and unity. The anthem is played on official occasions such as political or civil events.
