In 2020, 47,969 people lived in the city, while 247,138 people lived in the metropolitan area. In the past, Binghamton was known for making cigars, shoes, and computers. IBM started in the Binghamton area. The area is home to Binghamton University.
In 2009, a man shot 13 people and himself dead.
