Dunaliella er ættkvísl af þörunga ættinni Dunaliellaceae.^[1] Dunaliella sp. eru hreyfanlegir, einfrumungar, staf- til egglaga (9−11 µm) grænþörungar (Chlorophyta) sem eru algengir í saltvatni. Þeir eru auðveldir í ræktun og mynda ekki klumpa eða þræði.
