Methanopyrus est un genre d'archée appartenant au phyllum des Euryarchaeota, à l'ordre des Methanopyrales. Ce genre ne comprend qu'une seule espèce décrite : Methanopyrus kandleri, qui est en forme de bâtonnet. Il s'agit d'un micro-organisme hyperthermophile (optimum de croissance à 98 °C), chimiolitho-autotrophe. Il est isolé de cheminée hydrothermale sous-marine, à 2 000 mètres de profondeur.
