Die GMW word geklassifiseer as ’n Magellaanse spiraalstelsel.[8] Dit bevat ’n staaf sterre wat geometries weg van die middel lê, wat daarop dui dat dit ’n dwergspiraalstelsel met ’n staaf was voordat sy spiraalarms versteur is, moontlik deur wisselwerkings met die swaartekrag van die Klein Magellaanse Wolk (KMW) en die Melkweg.[9]
